Emergency Lock Opening
Emergency lock opening, this service is probably the most common for any locksmith, you just got home and for one reason or another you cannot get in, or you simply just locked yourself out. The first thing to remember here is do not panic, we can get you back into your home, the second thing to remember is, do not try to gain entry to the house yourself. If you try to pick the lock as seen on TV and you are not sure what you are doing you can make the situation far worse and possibly more expensive for yourself too. Just call us on 07971 84 93 58 and we will do our very best to be with you as quickly as possible. (Please note we are not a 24 Hr service)There are only two ways a locksmith will gain entry to your home, either non destructively or destructively, this cannot be known until we see the locks on your door. In 9 out of 10 homes entry can be made in non destructive manner, this means that no damage will be done to the locks, we have various ways and techniques to bypass the locks or ways to open your door or gain entry to your property. If however you have lost your keys and have no idea where they might be, the safest and quickest way for us to gain entry is to destroy the lock and then replace it with a new lock and keys. We will need proof that you are the legal occupant before we gain access to the property, if you do not have any because it is indoors we will get you to sign our disclaimer and take your photo and car registration details. This as you can agree is for your protection as well as ours.
Lock replacement service
All external doors must be fitted with at least one British Standard Lock. Your contents insurance could be void with out it. If your door locks are more than 12 years old, you really should replace them, Locks certified to BS 3621 or BS 8621 can be recognised by the Kite mark on the product or the packaging and are often minimum requirements for home insurance policies, to meet home insurance requirements, please ensure that:
Our advise is to replace the locks if you have just moved to a new property, as you don't know if spare keys have been cut and who has them, or if your existing locks show any signs of sticking, it could be an indication that the lock may be failing. The fitting of new door locks along with other forms of additional security will deter burglars from targeting your home. We will fit like for like locks or replace your existing lock with a high security lock if requested.
- Existing uPVC doors are fitted with a multi- point lock with hooks and have a TS007 3 star cylinder and handle combination fitted. This ensures that the security is equivalent to BS 3621
- Existing wooden doors are fitted with a Night latch and/ or Mortice Lock certified to BS 3621 or BS 8621.
Security deterrents fitted
We supply and fit or just advise you on what security deterrents would suit your property. Each property is different so not all deterrents will work on all homes, it really depends on what you are worried about at the time, whether it is answering the door late at night or if you are away from home, each deterrent is tailored for your personal needs. If you are unsure about your existing security in general and need advise please take a look at our independent security advisors page.
We can cut keys on site, however we mainly cut the spare keys to the locks we have just supplied and fitted, as our van is small we cannot carry all key blanks with us.
RFIC fob/card duplication
We can also copy on site fobs or cards used for door access, these are mainly the 125Khz and the 1356Mhz which can be duplicated or copied onto a fob, card or a wristband. We can also copy some Mifare classic cards.

Independent Security Advisors
Thanet Locksmiths are also independent security advisors for the domestic home, small business owner or commercial user. We offer a personal and professional service for those of you who want to assess or are concerned about there existing security around the home or their place of work. Our unique service is catered around you. We visit every house, office or place of work individually and assess your property and staff for security vulnerabilities or weaknesses. After our assessment we will talk to you about our findings and advise you on what we think are your security weaknesses and what can be done to improve your existing security and what will deter or delay a potential burglar or intruder from entering your property. Any products that we provide should you wish to purchase them are recognized by both insurance companies and are police approved.
Services we provide.
Physical Penetration Testing.
A vulnerability assessment or a NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is a visual appraisal of your existing security that you already have in place. We will conduct a visual inspection of your existing security, your property and the surrounding perimeter, we will then finish by asking some rudimentary questions that will help us gauge your understanding of security and your needs and then advise on those needs.
Physical Penetration Testing
A physical penetration test is a full physical test as well as a visual appraisal of your existing physical security, this will include physical security controls, whether it be electronic controls, locks, alarms, perimeter defences or manned guarding. This type of testing is generally only conducted on commercial type premises. A physical test will comprise of multiple tests on your your existing security systems for weaknesses or vulnerabilities, we will attempt to break-in to your property like a real intruder would (but without the damage) and test every layer of physical security that you have within that property, we will also carry out social engineering tests to find the human weakness within your security and on completion give you a full easy to understand report on our findings and recommendations for you to upgrade your security to be more efficient, our assessment will also include basic anti terrorist awareness on your staff. For maximum effectiveness our tests should be as realistic as possible. This means the fewer people in your organisation to know the better. Typically, the test will be authorised in writing by someone at Director level within your company, this way should we get caught by your security staff or the police we have a get out of jail free card.
Why test physical security?
Companies invest large amounts of money in physical security controls, because they want to keep what they have safe. But how can you be sure that these controls are working effectively and that they’re preventing unauthorised access? Physical Penetration Testing will provide a valuable insight into your companies security posture and allow you to address vulnerabilities before these can be exploited by real intruders. Key benefits:
- Identify your vulnerabilities.
- Determine the feasibility of a particular type of breach.
- Assess the potential impact of a particular type of breach.
- Report findings and make the necessary recommendations.
- Provide evidence to support investment in security upgrades.
- Demonstrate good practice.
Conducting Physical Penetration Testing will go a long way to ensuring that your companies physical security profile is as robust as possible.
1) Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures.
2) Burglars tend to avoid homes with security deterrents.
3) Most break ins happen during daylight hours not at night time, because most people are out.
4) The typical burglar lives within two miles of the target home. Because they live close, it’s easy for them to learn your family’s daily schedule.
5) Most criminals can burglarize a home in less than ten minutes.
6) 34% of burglars enter through the front door.
7) Someone is in the home for 2 out of 10 burglaries.
8) 25% of people who have been burgled do not have home insurance.
9) 24% of homes burgled were detached houses.
10) 22% of burglars enter through the back door.
From our point of view there are only three types of burglars, the professional the organized burglar and the opportunist burglar. The opportunist is a type of burglar that does not plan ahead. This thief will look for quick and easy access, like an empty house or somewhere with a window or a door left open, they just happen to be in the right place at the right time. They will take full advantage of your trust or your forgetfulness. These types of burglars are very unpredictable and can be hostile or aggressive, and often have a drug habit. They are not afraid to smash a window or kick down a door and will do what ever damage they need to, to gain access to your property, once inside they will steel what ever they can find in the immediate area and will then sell for next to nothing to satisfy their drug habit. In our opinion the opportunist burglar are possibly the worst type as the damage they cause will cost you more than what they steal. The organized burglar is in between the opportunist and the professional, they will plan their burglaries before committing one. They have connections to sell what they steal and often study their victims thoroughly before attacking their home or place of work. They will memorize a family’s or employes habits, like when they come and go to work or school times, they might even follow you to the shops to see what you buy, especially when the shops have sales or at Christmas time. This type of burglar does not want to get caught, and good security measures will deter them. The professional, this type of burglar is probably the most experienced and the most successful. These burglars are specialized. After years of burglarizing homes and businesses, they will target specific high value items, like silver, gold or paintings or information etc. They know what they want, and they know how to get around specific security systems. The Professional burglars do extensive research on the property or the people they are going to steal from, they will buy information and even carry out a vulnerability assessment. They plan for every possible event, this type of burglar will only attack high end properties and commercial buildings. To prevent this happing to your business we recommend a physical penetration test.
Why homes get burgled
Homes typically get burgled through deliberation or opportunity and of late due to lack of common sense, busy people don't seem to have the time to check that all the windows and doors have been locked or children are happy to advertise the fact that they are going on holiday via face book or twitter or some other social media. Trust us when we say that nothing can prepare you for the shock and surprise you get when you arrive home only to find out it has been burgled, you will never know what effect it will have on you until it happens to you. We have known people to move house rather than go back there because of the emotional stress, we have also known people not to do anything at all to their security only to get burgled again, we have also known people to go way overboard with security to reassure them selves to feel safe within there own home. Do not think it will never happen to you either, it might, and do not become complacent because you have some security in place, this it is not enough to rely on alone. To have good security you and family members need to be observant too, look out for strange people in the area or cars out of place. It really doesn't hurt to become a little paranoid either, don't become habitual vary your routines and routes to and from work, do what you need to protect your home at all times, and remember prevention is always better than cure. This is where we come in, we will give you the advice you need to help you understand how to make you home of place of work more secure without spending a fortune.
Why businesses get burgled
Any Business or commercial premises that employ staff, depending on there size of business get attacked for two reasons
1) Not enough money spent on security.
2) Not enough time spent with staff on how to use security.
This may sound fairly obvious but think about it, i have seen a small local chemist been broken into many times because they are too tight to invest in security, also i have seen large businesses get burgled because there staff are vulnerable to social engineering attacks or there RFID access cards are left lying around to be scanned and copied for misuse at a later date. Any security system employed is only as strong as its weakest user. All staff members including the tea lady if people still have them should be trained or at the very least be made aware that anything at all suspicious or out of place should be reported to there supervisor and then followed up and not just ignored. Security for your business should be a priority and should be rehearsed just like your fire drills. Locks on doors, cctv and alarms systems just don't cut it any more. Train your staff and improve your security or your complacency with what you have maybe your downfall.
Our advice should you take it, is to make your home or workplace more secure and hopefully will deter any potential break-ins. However there is no guarantees, if a burglar really wants to get in they will, all we can do is offer our knowledge and advice to make your home or place of work much harder to break into.
